Your racing "office"

Hi guys,

i visit the "Sim Racers" group on facebook quite often. It's obvious that more and more people put a lot of money and time into building their sim cockpits. Professional sim rigs or hand made, made of aluminium profiles, wood or even plastic pipes, single screens/TV or triple screen setups, some have butt kickers or even motion seats, some cost pretty much nothing, others are worth thousands... The only reason why i don't have a cockpit yet is simply lack of free space in our flat. But i'm definitely going to build a low budget wooden cockpit sooner or later (probably based on Ricmotech plans).

I was wondering, it could be interesting to see what kind of equipment people use here at HSO. Would you share pictures of your "office"?

Chair with wheels  

I use a Gamepod GT2, must do a pic since I haven't in a long time.

For a DIY cockpit I had plans to do a PVC one for my son, I found that it was quite easy (And cheap) to replicate the Rhinoseat with PVC tubing, plus it weights very litte and is easy to move around or clamp agains the wall.

it helped very much now i can drive many hours comfortable for very low price and it didn take much bigger room tham Petrs wheel chair (i drowe with wheel office chair years ago in GPL ERA, only difference i had piece of carpet behind wheels to stop the chair go back from pedals on braking)

the new seat is usable as normal room chair to watch TV for example

Does anybody have any kind of plans, blueprints etc.. wich would make my project easier?

I can make it happen the other way round if you tell me how to solve that problem my monitor gives me if I try to run anything on fullscreen mode with its resolution

I've got an incredible news. My fiance told me that she has a wedding gift for me - she will give up her part of the living room, so that I can have a cockpit there! I'm ready for Ricmotech RS1. Wooohoooooo!

I am currently looking at SimLab rigs...

Wait until you are married, we will see if you can still have that part of the living room - better ensure the Ricmotech can be disasembled easily

I'd make the most of it and use Loctite to assemble it. It will never leave your leaving room. Not until your fiancée learns how to use an angle grinder.

But i'm cautiously optimistic, as we've been together for nine years and there's A LOT i tolerate on her side I've talked about it for years, so i must use this unique opportunity. Look everythingh will be fine at the beginning, until nature takes over and she has a baby. Then your life will change forever  

So here is my hint: When she talks about babies try to steer the conversation to something else she likes (A trip in summer you have planned, going out for dinner that week, etc), resist as much as you can, acceot confrontation and fight for your position and finally, when you are on the verge of divorce, when she hands you the very last ultimatum ... then, and only then ... get her a dog puppy! That will buy you at least two years more of peace

Ugh, it seems like i have to re-think my approach to... everything Thankfully, she's eight years younger, so there's some time to go until we have kids

Anyway, back to the original topic. The first step is to buy a decent seat on scrapyard. There's a large one nearby, it shouldn't be a big issue.

The next thing is the project. It would be rather easy to buy Ricmotech plans for some 30 bucks, but there are two issues for me. First, i need a different monitor position (lower than the wheel). And second, RS1 is a bit too large due to pedals mounted upside down. I'm not really in favor of this solution. Does anybody have experience with G25/27 pedals used like that?

The Ricmotec is an excellent cockpit and very solid, but it also weighs a lot and requires a good amount of work hours to build. If I can make a suggestion (And I studied the matter a lot some time ago), try building a PVC piping cockpit. It is incredibly cheap and you just need a simple saw to cut the parts and glue. If the design is carefully planned, the result is very sturdy, lightweight and also racey looking (Roll-cage style).

You can easily replicate with PVC the Rhinoseat cockpit, just study the angles of the corners and buy the proper joints, 90º and 45º cover everything. For a good result, you must first get your seat and place it on top of a box or pile of books in the position you want it, then start doing your mock up with tubes around it to see where they fit, and finally cut and seemble them. I can provide later a diagram if you are interested on it, as I made it to build a cockpit for my son at his request (I did not build it yet because he is in growing age and teh cockpit would be too small soon).

I agree that PVC cockpit is not a bad solution at all. There's a video from Inside Sim Racing where they built a reviewed one of these and looks solid. It's relatively easy to build and lightweight, so the pros are quite obvious. The thing is that Anna wants it to be a good looking piece of furniture (as it will be placed in the living room). No cabling hanging around, no "technical looks" like aluminium profiles or plastic tubes. We went through all different kinds of cockpits and Ricmotech-style with wooden sidewalls is what she approves. Frankly, i'm fine with it as that's what i wanted to build in the first place. I realize that it's not an easy task and definitely won't be done in one day, but my father has all the tools needed and his woodwork skills are very good, so we'll make it a father-son project, which is another nice aspect to the whole thing

Anyway, it doesn't really need to be Ricmotech, i think it will look more like this. Much easier to build, as there's no need to cut out the sidewalls.

Yes in the end the DIY design is the best, as it gives you exactly what you want. If your father has the tools and craftmanship, your choice is clearly the ideal

I haven't recognized that tank. The map seems to be Karelia if my memory is correct
