Would anyone like to recommend and old Nascar mod circa late 1960s early 1970s? I am sure there is one out there, I just have no idea if there is one that meet's HSO's standards.

I don't know of any for rFactor, except the American muscle mod, and that one is not a NASCAR one. There was recetly a revamp of it with aditional cars, but most liveries are fantasy, interiors are "street" and cars not always period correct.
This was the old one, which Frank specially hated: http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=American%20Muscle
If you want a mod for NR2003, then there are plenty of good ones for that era, but they all will use physics from the CTS trucks
Missing turning left only already?

I remember seeing WIP shots of a 1972-ish mod for rFactor by someone called Mopar Bob, I think, but I don't know anything about its current state.

Nah, just looking to see if there was one out there for rFactor. Apparently not.
I'd shy away from the Muscle car mod as I recall reading the old "the end" post inside of the series Frank ran. It died due to lack of participation. Cars sound like gold but look like Windows 98 era graphics. I do admit I like to drive that one a LOT offline

Only decent NASCAR physics come from any Papyrus' game. NR2003 has the largest range of mods and tracks however, and there are a fair few historic mods (GN55, GN66, GN70 from what i remember)). Sometimes you need to ignore the graphics and just drive
If you want one for rFactor, there are some half decent mods at F1Classic, mostly converted from NR2003 however.

Moi ? I loved that mod ! So much that I organised the 1970 USAC National Stock Car series at HSO with it. It was the people who didn't like it, as the rapidly declining attendance showed .
HGTTC 1.95 has better versions for the Pony cars (Javelin, Camaro, Mustang), but only AMM has decent Muscle cars in rFactor (Torino, Charger, Roadrunner, ...etc.) AFAIK, so an historic NASCAR series on rF is very problematic...

I thought I had readed a comment from you saying the physics were crap. Must have been another mod, then
Anyway by the time that mod was used HSO had way less drivers, specially US, maybe nowadays it would draw more public in, who knows. In anycase if there is an open on sundays with it or the NR2003 GN70 mod, you can count me in

The US Transam >2 litres championship with HGTTC 1.95 would also be huge fun

Or most likely another admin . Truth is the physics were not awesomely cool, but then we were not using the V3 but the previous one, so maybe they're a bit more awesome now . Anyways yes there are quite a few historic US series and championships we could do with rFactor. Some Can-Am racing would be great but the existing mods lack full fields and decent physics...

With research, I've been able to find 3 different historic NASCAR mods for rFactor.
This mod has been in work for 11 years apparently, but the guy doesn't know enough on how to develop the mod further, I think that's the physics section. Believe the modder is MoparBob, which is a familiar name (I think from NR2003?). He's looking for help. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.148886775125929.28760.100000138230766&l=6329e1eea8
Convert of the GN63 mod from NR2003. Models and sounds are really nice, plus a full set of cars from '63 however I think the torque/grip level needs to be adjusted-the car feels to planted to be an American muscle car. http://f1classic.your-talk.com/t13093-release-grand-national-1963
That NR2003 GN70 convert..haven't tried it, but from what I've heard it wasn't too great. http://f1classic.your-talk.com/t11891-release-grand-national-1969-70-v12-from-nr2003
Iirc, this mod also contains the 1988 "aerowar" Cup cars as well as one of the IROC seasons: http://www.vhracing.net/VHR-Stockcar/Downloads/Downloads.html

So many great mods and so little time to race/mod
The main problem with old NASCAR mods is that those are the most dificult tracks to find for rFactor. And even if the track is there, it will probably a modern version

Well for the USAC Stock Car series I was surprised to find so many period short tracks available on rF. There were hundreds of them on NR2003 and a lot were converted to rF in fact. Most had a modern setting (huge grandstands, modern pits, modern ads, ...etc.) but then we have the same problem with many of the road courses we use.
Another problem when you think of a NASCAR series under HSO rules is that you're looking at schedules of 50+ races per year for the pre-1972 era and 30+ for the post-72 years... I doubt we'll find a field of drivers to venture in such a demanding championship ?

If you have an NR2003 to rFactor track conversion tutorial, I could probably attempt to de-modernise some circuits through Sandbox

Your most probably right, and add to that the fact that races also weren't exactly "short". Not counting the 500 miles ones, the rest usually were above two hours.
In any case, IMHO it makes no sense to reinvent the wheel and use rfactor for these kind of races when NR2003 is available and well proven, yellow flags, rollings starts and all. For almost any stock car racing, the classic NR2003 still is the best. I hope that you admins consider doing at least one Open with any of the old GN mods, maybe using beautiful road tracks like Riverside if you think oval racing would be less appealing to people here.
For american muscle championships with rfactor, probably TRANSAM would be a better choice if we could get a full grid painting missing skins.

I think the Trans Am has never been considered here, because the races are 3 hours long IIRC.
@Alessio : It's the only way I know. With trkmaker (from 3D SimEd) you convert the terrain (ptf to xml to gmt) and with 3D SimEd itself you convert the objects. But it won't open the default NR2003 tracks though.
In 3D SimEd you open the ptf file, you should see the track. With the batch converter, you convert mip files to dds, you save the objects as rFactor gmt and it generates the scn file. When you open the scn, you have a rFactor track, and from there it's not different from working on another track.
