It's often the case on racing cars, as first gear is seldom used you might as well have it bottom left with reverse top left .

Youmean only the knob or the gear selection pattern? The M1 has a ZF dog-leg gearbox (Exactly the same as installed in the De Tomaso Pantera and other GTs of the era), so the 1st gear as Frank said is left-down, as it less used in racing and so you only have one selection where you have to do the longer and slower diagonal way, between gears 3-4: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_leg_gearbox
My E30 M3 also had that gearbox, and it was great. It never felt odd or even needed rethinking, even my wife drove it easily and it was soon intuitive to go left-down at the start. Switching to the other car with normal gearbox didn't cause any problems either, all was natural. I really liked and now miss it

avant de toujours parler de la securité des circuits les gens feraient mieux de se concentrer sur la formation des commissaires et personnels de santé au bord des circuits ( surtout du cote de l asie d ailleurs ) ou on met a des postes tres importants que des branquignols de merde !!!!!!!!!!!!! meme si pour moi il etait deja mort et que ca n aurait rien changé c est quand meme juste du grand n importe quoi ( une jambe dans le vide , pas d installation de minerve , une gamelle ) comme s ils transportaient un vulgaire sac a patates

Lol, j'ai le meme manche avec un chiffon en microfibre au bout pour nettoyer mon pare brise à l'intérieur car il est tellement penché que c'est très difficile d'atteindre le bas (et pourtant je ne suis pas petit). Pour faire l'extérieur et en roulant, ça ne mettait jamais venu à l'idée...
