I'd would prefer the 88-90 cars (my favorite era of sportscar racing), though.

Maybe in 2020 we will be able to race the Nissan R90 CK vs the Sauber C11 vs the Jaguar XJR-11 vs the Toyota 90-CV vs the Joest 962C, in rFactor 4, with fully compatible driver changes lol! lol! lol!

lol! sorry... I just don't see the point in racing those horrendous looking C-juniors (yes, even though Group C gave us the most beautiful cars, they also gave us cars which were even more dreadful than those Grand-Am Daytona Prototurtles), or those slow "Group B" Porsches (1 minute a lap slower than the fastest factory 956 at Le Mans!!!!)

That's the problem of some many mods, they try to have everything, but some cars are just plain slow. Therefore, nobody drives them (see the GP79). Or then there are those stupid rules about having to race with every car on a given championship (that's real :hihi: ), or using the same physics for the cars (that's plain simulation! scratch ).

It would be much better to stick to the championships which were fought between different makes, not those were there's a great car (Capri) and the others are much slower. Sometimes, the mod groups should be more conscious about this, or the "favorite" mods stay the same old boring "troufeuzada" (which we say in Portuguese, meaning trophy cups, but in a derogatory way), like Meganes and s*** like that

Anyway, sorry for the rant... bounce bounce bounce

The point is that even driving a slow car, you still can fight for the win in your categorie, something impossible in F1 79, where Merzario, Ensign, Rebaque etc ... could have been part of a sub categorie :aie:

I think that's great to have all cars, even if some of them are slow and nobody drives them. And there're still some crazy guys, like you, to drive them in hardcore championships Smile

But why fight for the win in a lesser category?!

I do understand that aspect of racing in real life (not everybody has the $$$ to compete on the top category!), but I never understood it in simracing. Heck, it costs the same to race in a GT1 or a GT2 (in simracing, that is!) scratch scratch Well, maybe some guys race just for the win, and not for the enjoyment (and winning a GT2 race against other 8 or less guys fulfills their ego needs more than coming 6th against 24 other guys!)

Some guys praise some leagues because they had an average attendance of 20 guys during a season. Then you see it was do to having TWO grids of 10 cars each. That's less than GPL

Sorry, rant day... Suspect Suspect Suspect

Sub-categories in racing in general and Long Distance in particular have always been there. Not only a question of funds regarding the drivers and teams, but also the opportunity for a wider spectrum of constructors to experiment and showcase their machines. Many a great race was made interesting due to the fight in the smaller classes when the battle for overall victory was a no-contest. Plus it made up for some of the greatest upsets in racing history, like when Moss won Sebring with the little gorgeous OSCA, etc.

Frank, I do know that and I do know that sometimes the slower cars won overall (like the Targa 1973, the Paris 1000 km in 1995 and the Le Mans 1969... well almost Laughing ), causing upsets that we now romanticize about (if there is such a word in English lol).

But frankly, what's the added value of a M1 (in a Group C mod, mind you!), or a disastrous C-Junior car that nobody knows or remembers except one or two almanacs? (or your name happens to be Janos Wimpffen lol! )

Don't you forget me Guillaume? I'm the specialist in slow, helpless and "nobody's want them" cars :D

Quote :
But why fight for the win in a lesser category?!

It's some there you find the most fun. All the top drivers always reach for the best cars. And you can't compete at equal terms with them. Many average drivers run into lesser category to have a chance to drive for a victory and not for an anonymous 10th place.
I'm one of those pilots. I will never compete with drivers like you or Guillaume. I'm too slow for that. So, by having, lesser category like in BSCC I can have my part of glory and then keep up a bit of motivation to drive. It's no very fun to drive in a championship where you have no chance at all to even approach the podium (it will be the case in most of them for me). And with no results come demotivation then renunciation. One championship can start with 30 drivers. But if more than half of them will never have the only single chance of scoring you'll very soon find this championship to be drive by only ten peoples.

These year I'm aligned in a lot of championship. I've no chance to win one. But;
-in 1979 there's the Master's Cup. There, with my poor car, I can be in the top 10. It's motivating me. So I won't quit it because I'll be far far away from anybody. Driving in "lesser category" (as the Shadow is one) will not be a too strong handicap after all in this formula.
-in BSCC I'm capable to drive in the middle of the touring car I hope. Even, with a superb driving and little luck, could I grasp a podium with my Mini. That's challenging. So there again I won't quit. If I was driving the upper category I'll be hopelessly last in every race. What's the interest there?
-M1 is a bit different. I"ve no ambition at all there. Just a fun nothing else. Well I've one goal there. I want to be before others drivers. We have similar level in other categories so it will be my challenge.
-Aurora...well if the driving date changes I won"t be able to race at all. There again just for fun.
-In BCRL's GPL 65 I'll will be driving a BRM (one of the best for change Laughing ). I may be an outsider. Every championship I drove there I've finished in top 5 (even vice-champion with one victory and four second place in Cups). Well bad example for once :D .
-In F1 Legend's GPL 67 I'm no match for top guns. But by taking slow cars I'm able to be in the top 15..even with a better ratio race drive/race finished I can be in the top 10.So there I'm driving in lesser category and I've fun...even podium and victory (as at Jops in S3 last year or Monaco in S2..and all with the heavy BRM). The bonus for having a slow car keeps me afloat while having fun for the all season (well more or less...sometimes it's rather difficult)

This year there will be only in C-Group that I have no chance at all to be competitive because there's no "lesser categoy". Results: I may quit during the season if I see I lagged to far behind (which is almost a certainty)

You've forgot Le Mans 59 (win Aston Martin. Faster car was the Ferrari), 79 (all prototypes out of race), 91 (win Mazda. Faster car was the Mercedes), 94 (a LMP GT1 defeats a LMP1 more powerful), 95 (McLaren..a GT beat all other proto), 99 (Porsche beat Toyota the faster car.. it was again an GT1 who wins in front of LMP) and 2008 (Peugeot was far faster than Audi). :D

It was in 98 when Porsche defeated Toyota and Mercedes with a slower car (which wasn't that slow after all).
And in 99, it's BMW who won Smile

Here's what happens when you write huge posts like this one :langue:

But three seconds slower than Toyota and Mercedes overall. And also three seconds a lap behind Toyota in race but Porsche was far more reliable that Toyota whose gearbox happened to be Achille's heel

I think you missed my point Ludovic, especially when you talk about the surprising wins (more of that later).

I'm not against underdogs cars (hey, I HATE ONE CAR-MODS and how they ruin rfactor racing!), what I'm against is the multitude of classes with no added value!

I'm not against the Mini vs Falcon era in Touring cars (by the contrary, I always loved the difference in the field in those years, especially compared with today's one, when there's only those boring S2000 cars, with the "same" (but cheated) rules).

IMHO I race for fun, not for fame (I couldn't care less if I'm first or last, what I care is that I race with someone, instead of just doing some extensive hotlapping for the whole race). Other way, I wouldn't race in the GP79 championship, because the Rebaque is just plain slow and I don't even grasp the prospect of finishing a race in the points. But who cares, if there are a couple of other guys who have the same pace. Even so, this choice is made because of the rules, not because I want to race the Rebaque (the color scheme doesn't do for me LOL).

But again, we're talking about the same class, not some god forsaken class that nobody remembers (anyone remembers Group B in circuit racing? I thought so!!!!)

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:

I don't know, but I may find out eheheh... But I think they all raced in the same class, with Ferrari clearly favoring greater horse power than a better chassis :D

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:
79 (all prototypes out of race),

The rain suited more the Group 5 Porsches than the Group 6 prototypes (which, at that time, were also a dying breed).

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:
91 (win Mazda. Faster car was the Mercedes),

With f***** up rules, were the Mazda raced with 830 kg cars and the rest of the C1 cars ran with 1000 kg... What a deserving win

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:

94 (a LMP GT1 defeats a LMP1 more powerful),

Porsche "cheated" it, as always ( Wink ), because the rules were too liberal and their only way to beat the Group C Toyotas was to run a "GT" 962, which had a bigger fuel tank (120l vs 80l). (

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:

95 (McLaren..a GT beat all other proto),

Again, because of rain and because Mario Andretti binned it (clearly, it had past his age).

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:

99 (Porsche beat Toyota the faster car.. it was again an GT1 who wins in front of LMP)

It was 1998, and both cars ran in the GT1 category Wink
Moreover, in 1999, Toyota was again beaten, but this time by the BMW prototype (incidentally, the GT-One ran as a proto in 1999)... Again, same class!

Ludovic Tiengou wrote:

and 2008 (Peugeot was far faster than Audi). :D

Same class, but a better overall car for that race in particular (and a bit more luck - think of the incident between TK and the slower Baratzi Zytek - and a lot more experience).

And we could go on and on :drink: :drink: (another one that I remembered was the Mercedes victory at the Carretera in 1951 with the "prototype" 300 SL, which only had a 180 bhp engine, but a much better aerodynamic shape).
