Quote :
I was thinking about another bad thing of more
draft effect, and is that it would be more difficult to race close to
the car in front because in theory you will lose downforce.

IIRC you can tweak separately draft and turbulence for the car behind. But of course if you want to be realistic, a good draft should also cause noticeable loss of grip.

The turbulences issues while following another car is something you start hearing about in F1/CART broadcasts from the late 80's, but I've never heard of that in Group C racing.

I think we should do this race http://touringcarracing.net/Races/1988%20Silverstone.html

Wide mix of cars from world wide (BTCC, ATCC, ETCC) Also as it says, The race showed what the WTCC could have been.

Speaking of, wasn't there many years ago a touring car race in the Isle of Man, where the mythical motorcycle Tourist Trophy was run? IIRC the Isle of Man is available for rfactor 1987 Kyalami Sportscar Sprint [May 5th] - Page 7 18590

There's a ~25 km version available (not the full track because back when the track was done, GPL couldn't handle longer tracks).

I really REALLY want to like that mod but I can't. The ease at which the cars break traction when the turbo kicks in is just rediculous. Also, the cars feel like bricks. I have driven a car very close to the 98 cars (an SCCA car that used a 97 March chassis but slightly BIGGER engine). It handled like it was on rails and even with massive turbo effect it grabbed like a drunk hobo sucking on a 5th of Jack Daniels.

I do not remember the exact phrase the car's owner used but that was how he described how well the car would hold the corners. This was on a track near College Station Texas called Texas World Speedway. The layout was a lot like the road course version of Daytona Motor speedway. My neck hurt very very bad after the run. I had to take ibuprofin to sleep it hurt so bad.

Edit: He drank...a LOT :D

Edit 2: It was a Lola/Cosworth, not a March. Sorry.

Makes you wonder doesn't it, Mike? There are so many mods today. Are any of them actually that close to the real thing in terms of handling and power? Driving the sim obviously gives you the chances to really thrash a car but would the Lola you drove change that much if it was driven to the absolute max? Maybe , maybe not. I'll bet that was a blast to drive though!!

You fail to realize how slow I am in the sims Smile

I think I came pretty close to its limits. I 4 wheel drifted it in most fast curves. I do not pretend for a second to have been able to drive it like the Pros did though. But I could floor it coming out of a sharp curve and the back end stuck like glue. That is the key thing I think is wrong with this mod. Do that in low gear in the mod and you and the fence will be meeting up.

True that! No probably not, but in most cases the throttle is at least somewhat useful in modulating a turn. My clear favorite for this is the HGT 1.95 mod. I have come to like a certain Ford Escort and its torque curve.

But was it a turbo? Turbocharged engines -and especially competition ones- are very different to drive. You can be sure that with 800+ HP and a big single turbo (Instead of two, or even three small ones) the lag and the power entry is absolutely brutal.

Do that with a real champcar and you will end in the fence too 1987 Kyalami Sportscar Sprint [May 5th] - Page 7 420535 Even the onboad data about throttle you see in TV does not tell the whole story. The way those pros balance and straighten the car before the end of the turn and floor it smoothly easily goes unnoticed in TV, but is key to be able to apply throttle at the point they do. Us mortals end up giving too much gas with too much steering wheel angle and an unbalanced car, and it catches you easily.

You can read 1st hand experience of what it is for an amateur to slowly come to grips with one of those cars here: http://www.lolachampcar.com/
