And to think it would take them another 10 years before the FIA made them install barriers.
For those who still fancied racing at a 200 kph average on a track without virtually any safety precautions, we still had the longer version of Chimay which lasted until the 90s. One barrier along the start finish straight and lots of barbed wire fencing, ditches, houses, trees and a big drop onto a railway line running underneath some parts of the track. I attended the last race on that track in 1992 which was stopped following a horrible fatal accident.
The reason for using such circuits was "bring the cars to the crowds" and "don't do a full championship on just Spa and Zolder".
So there was the odd destruction derby on the streets in the heart of Brussels, or around a cattle market parking lot.
And finally, a proper track.

Looks like I need to rearrange my seating position a bit. I backed it off slightly from the realistic position, thinking I was a bit too high up in the car and a bit to close to the wheel. Didn't realize exactly how different the structure of the car was.
From the angle of much of this footage, you're really packed in that puppy :O Obviously, the angle of the footage plays a role here, but dang, pretty tight in there. ...almost triggers a bit of claustrophobia (that I don't even have...lol)

This is the 1989 car designed by a certain Adrian Newey, the March's of that time were known to be very very cramped. Something Newey wanted to minimise drag and make the car more aerodynamic.
The 91 car, was more driver friendly comfort wise.

Noticed that after I commented. Tried, briefly, to find a bit of 91 footage but came up empty. Youtube seemed pretty shy of such footage, but I only tried one search as I'm about to head out for work and didn't have the time.
Sort of comical, in a way. The amount of time and effort I spend trying to make my cockpit nice and comfy...and here they were in the real world like "here's your car, shut up and drive it"...."oh, it's cramped you say? Suck it up buttercup!".....lol
So I guess if I want true to life simulation, I should just find the most cramped, uncomfortable position I can imagine, throw some crap over top of me only inches from hands, squeeze my legs together, and grin and bear it. Seems a better representation of the truth, at times.
Hard to imagine having to manhandle one of these things in those tight quarters. And the bad habit I've developed of "one handing" the cars at times just wouldn't work a bit in that thing.
