F1 1978 Monaco broadcast and questions

Hi all, yesterday I followed the broadcast of Monaco GP, great stuff. Not an easy track for sure but anyway, you drove very well, no chance for my skill ... maybe in a far future

May I ask you some questions ? Because i love those old F1 cars and i would like to improve my skills to enjoy them better.

I downloaded the mod+tracks and spent the last few evenings offline on kyalami and Monaco … it’s a joy to drive those cars with those sounds … but then I saw your hotlap times on kyalami and I was very impressed, how can you be so fast ? I am very far from them (even the AI @ 95% is very very far form them).

For sure I need much more time to know how to drive them and to learn the right car setup.

And here is my question: I saw the broadcasts of the 1978 GP of last few weeks and I see that you are very “stable” (sorry for my bad English); I mean you do not “slide” even in the corners and, at your fast pace, I really cannot imagine to do it.

I suppose that’s because of your skills and your car setup. I am still new at the setup world but, may I ask you if someone could send me the setup you used for kyalami and/or monaco (the two tracks where I drove a lot last weekend), so I can try & understand the difference of a good setup (maybe in a PM if you prefer) ? I promise you that I do not spread the info even under torture

… that way you could help me to become a good driver and fully enjoy those cars (and maybe become a competitor in the future)

Yeah we have some big aliens around (Though you should have seen the aliens we had some years ago that was really morale destroying) but the F1 mod is especially tricky. The most important thing is not that you are fast, but that you feel in control of the situation. A quick driver can easily lap with no problems a slower one that can place the car where he wants, but a not so slow driver that has not full control of his car will instead guarantee a collision. So don't you really worry about race pace, and focus instead on being under control.

Sure, I'm glad to help. Here's my Kyalami setup for the ATS (it may work with other cars?). The ATS does not have very good aero, so this one slides a lot, and so eats up its tyres quickly. But I had a safe race at Kyalami at least.

Well I don't know how far you are from the fastest times, but you should know that even the perfect setup will not make you gain 2 seconds a lap (unless your current setup is completly wrong and made your car undriveable). I'm afraid all you need is training
When I joined my first online simracing league I was also amazed by the laptimes.

Indeed training and experience improve more the speed than you can get with a setup.
In waiting, you can register a car in Italian touring car, F5000, etc... just to get more experience on track, to learn from others drivers about trajectories, to overtake or to be overtaken....
The firsts races in a league are always a little bit scaring.

Actually my first races here were quite relaxed. After the green lights everybody was gone and I had the track for myself, there was no difference with being offline

I wasn't quiet but very stressed for my first race. It was a summer swedish champ in a Porsche 911, the #720 Bertrand from HGT, but I don't remember which track. I was 7th in qualy, and it was scary to start from that place.

Oh dear, in one of my first races online, I ended up in the seventh or eight grid position. So far I was happy in a field of 20.

My competition wasn't when I completely missjudged the performance of cold brakes and took 2/3rds of the first three rows with me before the first corner...

So you was banned from there, and you landed here.

In HSO, if I remember correct, it was in Argentina with the Shadow from the mod 79. As Alberto I quickly saw no one in front me. It wasn't much a problem as I crashed rather quickly

Nah, that's already more than 10 years ago, but for the rest of the season, I was banned to the last grid spot and was obliged to count to ten before I was allowed to start when the lights went green...


...not that you can't cause havoc from there, too, albeit of a different kind

Oh, they did the same thing to me, but they soon found out I enjoy being whipped too much to make it a real punishment

There are some general ways you can go about improving yourself, the 1st one is to drive the cars.

In my case I really enjoy the Touring Car Legends cars and for 2 years straight there wasn't a day where I didn't drive those cars unless I had no computer to run them on.
That way I improved a lot on my driving and understanding of the cars, now to the degree that I pretty much can jump into a race with those cars, look at the track (is it bumpy, few turns, many turns, oval and so on) and make slight adjustments and immedietly be happy with the car and have fun

The next bit, when you feel comfortable with the car, is to play around with the setup (or look at Albertos' setup guide, it's a good one)
In my case I joined an online league at that point and played around with the cars' setup. I went to extremes to get an idea of what each thing did to the car. Little by little I understood. I also asked around on forums and on TeamSpeak when drivers were around for little hints and tips on what the cars would need.
While doing this I also found my driving style, all drivers have different driving styles but they can be similar to the degree that some setups works for every driver. In my case I drive the car a lot with the front end because I started out in FWD's 6 years ago (and to this day partake in Folkraces, a cheap kind of Rally Cross) and as such I have different setups compared to others.

So when you've found your driving style you'll have an easier time setting the car up the way you want it to be even more comfortable with the car at a given circuit.

So generally, drive the cars a lot, or A Car which you enjoy the most in the field, and gain experience with it.
