Been driving this mod all weekend, like it, I understand the cars were set up to easily turn left, however its a big time battle holding a straight line going down the straights, any way to make the cars drive a bit straighter ??

You can reduce front wing flap stagger and tire stagger, both things pull strongly to the left. If you look at older (Sometimes not as old too) oval racing cars you will notice the steering wheel is offset too, so that it seems straight when actually turned right. That helped the driver be sure he is going in straight line when in the middle of a pack with his view hindered by other cars.

Yes, thats what I mean, driving in a pack is risky business anyway, much harder when you fighting to go straight

Well given how important the setup in ovals is, you can drive in the pack with such settings ... or drive behind in empty space Laughing

I forgot to mention that caster is also staggered, you can access that in the advanced garage menu. Smile

Being from the US you must already be familiar with oval racing, but just in case I wrote down some tips here, in case it can give you some more ideas:

John, is there any chance your equipment is making this more difficult?  I remember from before that you were using a geared wheel as opposed to a belt wheel.

Hi, fellas!

Is there an HSO server up for practice featuring the up-coming round at Trenton? I'd kinda like to mix it with the hotshots and see how slow I am. Thanks.

Hi Jason, awesome work here bud, you and the guys have the beginnings of something special. As for the equipment, before I was driving with a G27, now I'm driving with a T300RS, just would like to know setups maybe ?, to make the cars go straighter, does anyone get on Teamspeak ?, that way we could talk setups and whatever else with these cars

The beginnings?!  John, forgive me for rolling my eyes, but we've been working on this as a group for two years. This is far from the beginnings  Rolling Eyes

Regarding making the car drive straighter, I don't think you understand the aim of this mod. The cars are setup to turn left, not drive straight. Having the wheel at 12:30 is to be expected. What you are wanting the mod to do is really the antithesis of what it is supposed to be.

Like Alberto said, less stagger and less wing flap offset = straighter driving.

how do i calculate the right amount of stagger? i know that it should not be a preference thing. i cant come up with a formula but the amount should be dictated by the banking, radius of a corner and the rear-track and wheelbase of a car right? this weeks trenton is obviously a special case but places like indy should be pretty straight forward in terms of stagger if i am correct.

Yes you can theoretically calculate that, but for that you would need to know the radius of the corner and have to your avail more stagger options in tiny increments. Besides, stagger is not as easy in powerful openwheelers because it can cause too much oversteer, therefore in real life it is not used based exclusively in the mathematical calculation of the turn radius. This makes things in all too complicated, so we simplified it with just three options per track type because many speedways have different turn radius (Trenton, Phoenix, Texas, Michigan) and you would need a compromise anyway.

You can check this table, not correct for our cars but gives you a general idea of the increments used in real life:

thx alberto. i guess the math is more applicable for sprintcars and similar cars on smaller dirt tracks then. 6 in the morning was probably the wrong time to think about complicated setup things anyway. especially on the oval side which i have never done before.

Fantastic mod guys! Some friends and I have been driving almost regularly in the evenings. We love the detail to the cars and their characteristics.

One thing I noticed was something very interesting about the tires. When the car is stopped and the engine turned off, I can hear the tires making a scrubbing noise like they are rolling, but they're not. Then I spun it 180 degrees off a corner and I was going backwards. Then I noticed that the car was gaining speed with the gearbox is Neutral. I found myself going over 120 MPH backwards! It was very crazy and funny at the time. The tire noise when stopped and now the weird backwards phenomenon makes me think they are connected someway in the tire model.

This is just a comment, not really a criticism at all. I imagine the tire model must be this way in order to get the correct behavior from them.

Again, fantastic job guys! We love the challenge and thrill of driving the cars.

Thank you for the kind words Rocky.  The tire thing you mention is an rFactor bug that we unfortunately cannot work around. We'll be announcing the '73 Indy 500 soon; hope you and your friends will join us for that one.
