Round 1 - Race of Champions [January 15th]

HISTORY

1965 was the first year the BRSCC (British Racing & Sports Car Club) organised its "Race of Champions" meeting in Brands Hatch. Far from today's concept of events such as the one created by Michèle Mouton in 1988 (a bunch of superstars from various motor racing categories gathered for a tournament of 1-vs-1 rallycross type races), the BRSCC meeting was just a standard British International rendez-vous similar to the ones organised at the time by the BRDC in Silverstone or the BARC in Aintree and Oulton Park. All these International meetings had the best national series on their schedule, but also had one or more international races for prestigious categories such as F1, F2, GT or Sportscars, which attracted some of the best drivers in the world.

This inaugural edition of 1965 was typical in this respect, and although there were no World Championship points at stake, a GP-like field of F1 cars (including a works Ferrari for John Surtees) was present. The main support race was the first round of the British Saloon Car Championship, and many of the F1 stars participated in that one as well. The F1 race was a time aggregate of two heats, and it is most remembered for the superb duel between Jim Clark and Dan Gurney : not only Gurney caught and passed Clark, but once in second place the great Scotsman made one of the very rare mistakes of his illustrious career and ended his race in the earth embankment ! Gurney’s joy was shortlived though, as a few laps later he had to retire with ignition problems and the win went to Clark’s teammate, Mike Spence. This was the first of two F1 wins for Spence (the other being the 1966 South African GP) before he lost his life in Indianapolis in 1968.
Clark was equally unlucky in the BSCC race, for he was forced to retire with a broken wheel while confortably leading the big Mustangs with his little Cortina. The Mustangs thus finished 1-2 with Roy Pierpoint and Mike Salmon.

For this event we will use a brand new version of Brands Hatch, made by Phil “Philrob” Roberts and François “FlyingDutchman” Remmen. After years of having to do with the 2006 version of the track (otherwise excellent but very modern looking of course) it is great to finally have an older version of this classic British track to race with. Phil and François did a great job as usual and this version of the track will be the one in the soon-to-be-released track pack for COMS’s 1965 F1 mod. Thanks again to both of them for providing us this track !

20:50 - Drivers’ briefing and reconnaissance laps
21:00 - Race Start (20 laps)

Behaviour on track

- as for all HSO races, it is required you use your real name both in-game and on the forum. Thank you.

- Chatting is STRICTLY FORBIDDEN in race session. It is allowed in qualifying sessions for technical issues only.

- Drive Through : If a driver has to do a drive through, even if there is no pit lane speed limit, he has to drive through the pitlane at 100km/h max (60mph). If he doesn't respect this, he will get a 30s penalty at the end of the race.

- Shortcuts : If a driver gains a position after shortcutting a turn, he is required to give it back as soon as possible. In the case where a driver would not do it rapidly, a 30-second penalty will be added to his total race time. In the event of abusive and intentional shortcutting, severe sanctions will be applied (up to definitive a ban from the league). To make sure you never shortcut a turn, try to always keep two wheels on the track.

- Respect the red light at the end of the pitlane.

Application and Interpretation of the Regulations

The admins alone are qualified to solve any problems raised by the application and the interpretation of the present regulations.

It's an all new 1965 version of Brands Hatch, made by the COMS team for their F1 track pack . Thanks to them for allowing us to use it by the way, as the track pack has not been released yet

Thanks, I'd make a point that people need to download this track, people might think that this is the same track as the one we used just before Christmas

Brands is a track I normally don't like, but this version has an ambience and period feel that makes it indeed enjoyable, congrats for the job
