| As a mark of respect for Brian Hart, who passed away this sunday I made this topic. Brian Hart, one of the 'garden shed' geniuses of the British motorsport scene passed away last sunday. After a promising early career as a driver in cars he prepared himself and then at the Lotus and Frank Costin's Formula 2 teams, he joined Cosworth in 1967 before leaving in 1969 to start his own engine development company. He was then contracted by Ford to develop the BDE. BDF and the alloy-block BDG 2-litre derivatives of Cosworth's 1.6-litre BDA. These engines dominated the European F2 championship in the early seventies, and went on to dominate rallying in the Mk2 Escort RS1800. Many years later Ford again asked him to design the BDT-E, the 'Son of BDG' with a larger block and head that was capable of capacities over 2 litres for the 20 'Evolution' RS200s and which ended up finding a good home in the rallycross scene from 1987 to 1992. As well as his work for Ford, he also designed and built competition engines under his own name, with the 2-litre 420R giving the big-budget competition from BMW and Renault a good hiding in the European F2 scene in the late seventies and early 80s, and can still be found running in Sports 2000, hillclimbing and rallying today. He then moved on to F1 thanks to his partnership with Ted Toleman's team in F2. He designed the 415T 1.5-litre turbo to power Toleman's cars, but unfortunately never had the money or facilities that the likes of Honda, Porsche and BMW could rely on to make it truly competitive (though Senna did manage to get a Toleman-Hart to 2nd in the 1984 Monaco GP). 415T 1.5-litre 'Monobloc' Turbo After turbo engines were banned, Hart went back to tuning Cosworth DFRs for a number of the smaller F1 teams. In 1992 he designed a 3.5-litre V10 engine (the 1035) and signed a 2-year deal (1993 & 1994) to supply the Jordan team which was successful given the small budget. '1035' 3.5-litre V10 For the start of the 3-litre era he changed over to a V8 (the 830) and supplied Arrows for the 1995 and 1996 seasons. For 1997 these engines went to Minardi, and Hart was contracted to design a new V10 engine for Yamaha which were to be used by the Arrows team. Tom Walkinshaw had bought the Arrows F1 team as a vanity project after falling out with Flavio Briatore at Benetton, and he decided that TWR should be producing their own F1 engines so in 1998 he made Brian an offer he couldn't refuse (in both senses of the word, if you know of Tom's reputation) and merged Brian Hart Ltd. into Arrows F1. Brian left the company shortly afterwards, disappointed that no resources were available for development (as Arrows was burning through all of TWR's budget), and Brian Hart Ltd eventually went down with TWR's sinking ship when it went bankrupt in 2002. | Sad news, I always admired his independent spirit . He was a decent driver too in the 1960s. | |

| Excellent man to read up on, excellent engines in Formula 2 with Toleman then gave Toleman, Senna, Jordan and Barrichello their first podiums. | |

no no, the 1997 Yamaha engine was an evolution of John Judd's 1996 Yamaha engine. Brian Hart was contracted to make the V10 for 1998.

| That's it, I knew another engine manufacturer (Judd) was doing something in there, Got mistaken with Hart.
But yes I did know the 1998 engines were rebadged Hart's basically.

| yes Richard. Sadly the Arrows (Hart) V10 of 1998 and 1999 was not really competitive. I remember Mika Salo saying (in 1998) that their engine had the least power of the whole grid. Even then customer Ford-V10s used by Tyrrel and Minardi were more competitive...although presumably more expensive then Hart's engine | |

Like when I see people writting "Benneton". This coming from the same Salo that managed to score in both a Tyrrell(0 stops in the wet to P5!) and Arrows(P4 even) at Monaco. Pretty badass, that Salo Just seen he married a Japanese and has two kids. R.I.P. Brian Hart

| To be very honest: I didn't really know him before I noticed his name on the Formula Retro website that also sells a March STP t-shirt. But without Andy, we probably wouldn't have seen STP enter motorsports. My fondest memory is the #43 STP car, driven by Kyle Petty, Wally Dallenbach Jr., John Andretti, Bobby Hamilton, etc. Very likely to be the most famous livery in NASCAR ever. | |

| I had heard about Granatelli yes, that was the big racing news for me the day that German guy had his ski accident in Méribel . I am more found of characters like Brian Hart, but Andy Granatelli was a real hardcore race enthusiast and I can always respect that | |
