With interest growing on the upcoming movie "Rush" coming out this September, a couple members over at the F1 Classic forum have conspired to bring a complete F1 1976 season including privateer entries and historic physics. As it stands, I am one of the members attempting to build this upgrade. This mod is strictly an upgrade to the already existing L.E. F1 1976 mod by Virtual Classics, and therefore physics and models are more or less made by Team CREW for F1 Challenge and converted by VirtualClassics to rFactor, thus the quality of the models are less than perfect.

I've been tasked to find or create the models of the privateer team's chassis. Which means I must develop the models for the Surtees TS16, Brabham BT44, Ensign N175, Penske PC3 and Shadow DN3 without the airbox. Obviously, I can pull all 5 of these chassis out of the F1 1975 mod, however these of course have the outlawed airboxes.

Now, I have very little knowledge of modeling, so I've come to ask how I should go about removing the airbox? Would the best idea be to unpack the .mas and import the model into 3dsimed, and remove the airbox in that?

Alternatively, does anyone know if any of these models exist for rFactor, F1 Challenge or any other games which does not include the airbox?

Thank you :conduit:

You can unpack .mas files with 3D SimEd, or use this. But good luck editing anything with 3D SimEd, it's a nightmare pale

Compared to 3D SimEd, is 3DS Max easier? Of course, it'll never be easy, but which would be easiest for a beginner?

Here, it's not a matter of easier for a beginner or not.
It's that (unless I have missed something) you can't do this in 3D SimEd. Yes you can remove faces, but you won't be able to cap the hole properly, and don't expect mapping it either.

For a direct conversion : 3D SimEd. When you want to edit the model or if you want to improve the conversion : 3D Studio Max.

3DSimEd nor 3DS Max were needed, all that was needed was that the airbox to be deleted (it had it's own seperate GMT, so there I could just remove it's instance from the .GEN):

Skins are not started.

I'm in need of images of the Brabham BT44B used by RAM Racing during this season, I don't know how it looks without the airbox.

At which GP/which driver?

RAM Racing had a few drivers during the season.

Loris Kessel
Emilio de Villota
Patrick Nève
Jac Nelleman
Damien Magee
Bob Evans
Lella Lombardi

Any specific driver/livery or as you said, just without airbox? Interesting is that the car Kessel&Co. drove had a different, smaller airbox than the works Brabham(judging by the pictures, but the airbox seems to have varied there):

I just saw that Rolf Stommelen had an interesting weekend at the Nordschleife, driving the BT44B-1 of RAM with #32 first(they forgot? to change to #36 as the #32 was the number Bob Evans had at Silverstone), but then switched to a third works BT 45-2 #77 as Reutemann received a the brand-new BT45-4(and the fact that Loris Kessel took legal actions and both RAM Racing cars were impounded by the police):

http://forums.autosport.com/topic/88674-ram-brabhams-germany-1976/ (Might not have been coincidence about wrong numbers when looking at the issue with Kessel)

(Which gives him the record of hacing used 3 different numbers at one weekend)

Actually, this might be useful, some high-resolution pictures, also showing the RAM Racing cars from time to time(Italian Website): http://www.passionea300allora.it/forum/topic/6930-correva-lanno-1976-galleria-immagini-e-commenti/page-4

Scroll down that page to also see the cars of Kessel, Evans and Lombardi(Nève's car is on page 3)

Another shot of Lella's car: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nv34rP6_TX0/Tdzoy6ccyQI/AAAAAAAAAE8/iVee-dexWaU/s1600/Lella+Lombardi+Zeltweg+76+RAM+BT44B.jpg

Here are the same pictures, but bigger: http://www.gpx.it/smf/index.php?topic=4822.15

In currently conclude(by looking at the pictures), that only Kessel(at France?) and the car of Stommelen(that never took part in the race) had no airboxes at all.

Is this any help, or did you know that already?

Shadow DN3? That car ran in 1974. The DN3B ran in early 1975 before Shadow moved onto their new chassis, the DN5.

You need to use the DN5..

The DN5 then evolved into the DN5B IN 1976.

The DN3B was used in 1976 as a privateer entrant. The cars which I've removed the air box of we're only used as privateers for that season.
