The second series Allessio posted ran as a support race at the one and only street course Dallas Grand Prix. My Dad and I attended it. That is the class that destroyed the track for the F1 cars. Man it was hot!

It's likely that it was Can-Am? I think they had similar fields in the mid-80s to the British Thundersports series with out-dated Prototypes, C2 cars and ex-F1/F2 cars converted to prototype spec.
Produced some interesting looking cars I think this used to be an Toleman at some point:

Yes the second generation Can-Am produced some weird ones indeed . The Herb Adams "Escort" car of 1983 being one the weirdest :

Unfortunately a spectator died as a result as the car cleared the fencing
