Mod idea

As far as I can tell, no one has made an Indianapolis 500 mod to cover the McLaren/Eagle/Parnelli years (1973 to around 1977) I'm thinking about creating this mod on my own using 3Ds Max. Does this sound interesting to anyone? (Besides Alberto, I mean )

I'd give a phalanx for a 1973 USAC Indycar mod !

Creating 1970s era cars would be far less time consuming; the surfaces are far simpler

These are the cars I would likely model:



McLaren M16. If I can get permission from the creators of the 1970s F1 mods, I could start with the McLaren M26 data and modify it from there (the F1 car was based on the Indy car after all)



Eagle Offenhauser. This would likely make up most of the field.



Parnelli. Always liked the look of these with the dorsal fin.

Sounds like a brillant project! With the help of the HSO modding team, that could be a top mod!

There would also be some work to do for a trackpack if we would do such a mod. Somebody said "JP" ?

Yes but its only 3 different chassis

More engines in 1989 though

I forgot they raced exclusively on ovals during those years. Problem is, oval racing on rFactor sucks (safety cars and caution don't work properly). Don't know about rF2 though.

I don't recall a time when yellow flags under USAC *ever* worked properly, so maybe that's okay! LOL

These are pics of a rough model I created of the McLaren M23 using Alias Autostudio. Not sure if I can save out obj files using this program or something similar that 3ds max can read, but as you can see, it shares a lot with its USAC counterpart.

Regarding the "broken" yellow flags and such in rfactor that Guillaume mentioned, I have done offline CART races with yellow flags and all worked correctly I think the only problem is apparently that the number of laps under yellow is fixed and not random, but that is no real issue for me -it might have influence in strategy, but since we race alone and don't have a crew working out the strategy for us, it is in fact better!

Does anyone know where I can find a good text resource for modeling cars for rFactor? I have much to learn about the minutiae of this process.

Its not that nobody wants to race ovals, even if that form of racing isn't popular here in Europe. But as I said, rFactor doesnt allow oval racing, at least with fully automatic yellow flags.

A 1987 IMSA GTP mod would cause less problem.
